Quantitative Estimation of Decomposition Process of Plant Debris in Paddy Field : II. Amounts and C/N Ratios of Plant Debris in Tropical Paddy Soils

The amounts and C/N ratios of coarse plant debris (CPD; &dt; 1mm) determined in the Philippine and Thai paddy fields were reported in reference to corresponding values in Japanese paddy fields. The total amounts of CPD in the Philippine and Thai paddy soils fluctuated greatly depending on the sampling sites, fertilization program, growth stages, and sampling seasons. However the amounts of CPD in the Philippine and Thai soils fell within the range of CPD contents of plots in Japan. Fraction > 4mm accounted for the largest amounts followed by the 1-2 and 2-4 mm fractions in the Thai paddy soils. C/N ratios of CPD in the Philippine and Thai paddy soils decreased with the decrease of the size in each soil to ca. C/N=15-20, as observed in the Japanese paddy soils. The mean C/N ratio of the 1-2 mm fraction in the Thai paddy soils was similar to that of the no-fertilizer plot in Japan. The characteristics of organic matter decomposition in the tropical paddy fields were discussed based on a comparison of the amounts of input organic materials (rice stubbles, weeds, organic fertilizer), plant debris in soil and total soil organic matter. The amount of organic matter incorporated into the Thai (tropical) paddy soils in the form of weeds and rice stubbles, and the amounts of CPD (that is, the early stage of decomposition of plant materials) were in the same range as that of the Japanese (temperate) paddy soils. However the amount of total organic matter was far smaller in the Thai paddy soils, which suggests a shorter persistence of incorporated organic materials in the tropical paddy soils.
