New Determination of the P and the P′ Regge Pole Parameters

Using Igi's sum rule for pion-nucleon S-wave scattering length and the Brookhaven new data on high energy pion-proton total cross sections, the P and the P′ Regge pole parameters are determined. The asymptotic form of the crossing even _<π>N forward scattering amplitude M^<(+>) (ν) is assumed to be [numerical formula] for large ν (lab. energy of the incident pion) where β>0,α_P=1,0-__<α_P′<1. α_P and α_P′ are the intercepts of the P and the P′ Regge pole trajectories at t=0, B_i the relevant residues. The numerical results areα_P′=0.61^+0.11_-0.15, σ_<π>N(∞)=4πB_P/ν_0=19.6^+1.3_-1.8(mb) and 8πB_P′/ν_0=30.8^+4.5_-2.8(mb). The ratio Re M^<(+)>(ν)/Im M^<(+)>(ν) for ν=8 to 20 BeV predicted from the above results is in excellent agreement with experiment.
