Vector Meson Effects in Kaon-Nucleon Scattering

The effects of vector mesons (ρ,ω,φ) on the low energy kaon-nucleon scattering are investigated under the assumption that the interaction due to the vector meson exchange dominates over the other interactions. The coupling forms of the vector mesons to nucleons are taken so as to be consistent with the nucleon electromagnetic form factor data. In addition, the universal nature of the ρ-couplings, as revealed by recent experiments, is considered. There is one undetermined coupling constant of the I=0 vector mesons which is arbitrarily adjusted by K-nucleon scattering data. The value obtained for this coupling constant is shown to be reasonable from the view points of the Sakurai's vector meson theory and the octet version of SU(3) symmetry. The model can explain the main features of K-nucleon scattering, as already shown by J. J. Sakurai assuming more simplified interaction forms for vector mesons. However, some experiments, such as the isotropy of the K^+-p angular distribution, cannot be understood by the vector meson effects alone. Further consideration of the Yukawa interactions (KNY) seems not to be helpful.
