Fast Knocked-Out Protons, Slow Pions and Mean Effective Mass Number in Hadron-Nucleus Collisions

Contamination of shower particles by fast knocked-out protons and that of heavily ionizing (grey and black) prongs by slow charged pions in hadron (h)-nucleus (A) collisions are estimated by using available experimental data. It is shown that (i) the mean multiplicity of the knocked-out protons counted as shower particles is at most equal to n^^-_g (the mean multiplicity of the grey prongs), and (ii) at most half of the grey prongs are due to slow charged pions. From these results, we obtain the following bound for the mean effective mass number A^^-_e(hA) used in big hadron model (collective tube model) : n^^-_g(hA)<A^^-_e(hA)<4n^^-_g(hA).
