Changes in strength, chemical composition, and structure of the femurs were examined after exercise in rats. Male rats were forced to exercise on a treadmill, and control rats were kept idle. The three-point bending test showed increased strength following exercise. The ratio of strontium content to calcium content showed a tendency to increase with exercise. An increase in the collagen content and a promotion of the cross-linkage after exercise were suggested from the amino acid analysis of bone protein. It is concluded that exercise influences bone strength, chemical composition of inorganic matter, and structure of organic matter.
