The Stability of the High-β Plasma in the TBS-Field about the Cusp-Axis

The effective confining region of "magnetic well" was studied in a Tennis Ball Seam (TBS) coil wherein the plasma density n=10^15 cm^<-3> and the electron temperatures T_e=2∿7 eV applied by a. c. discharge, which frequency was 91 kHz, of a condenser bank. The diffusion coefficient perpendicular to the mirror-axis was observed. And it was found that the drift wave instability for a long wave-length was not occur at the region ∇^2B>0,also the flute like instability. It may be come from increasing the value of β (β=plasma pressure / magnetic pressure). The diffusion velocity perpendicular to the mirror-axis was 10^5 cm / sec. This is one tenth as large as the ion acoustic velocity. And the decay time was fairly agreeablc in order with the expected value assuming the radiative recombination losses only.
