Structures of the terminal outgrowths of the S- and L-type hairs on the crayfish endopodium were studied both by SEM and by histochemical methods. The terminal outgrowth of the S-type hair showed a complicated structure and was named as the "Cyclopean-head" complex. The tip of the L-type hair had an apical pore and decorated with two rows of setules bilaterally. In the "Cyclopean-head" complex, there also a pore on the central projection. Pores of either hair type were connected to the lumen via a small canal. The inside of the canal as well as the lumen was filled with a plug material containing calcium. The function of the termial outgrowth was discussed with relation to ecdysis
