Evaluation of 3D-CT stereotaxic imaging for frontal cephalometric analysis

Frontal cephalometric radiography provides very important data for evaluating skeletal symmetry. However, unlike lateral radiographs, the effects on frontal radiographs of image overlap and positioning errors are great, making it difficult to obtain highly reproducible, clear and accurate morphological evaluations. To resolve these problems, the authors studied stereotaxic imaging using 3 D-CT and evaluated its usefulness in comparison to frontal cephalometric radiography. We subjected a skull model made of square aluminum plates (150mm on each side) to frontal cephalometric radiography and to frontal 3 D-CT after positioning it based on the Frankfort horizontal plane. The 3 D-CT images represented accurately the location, size and shape of the model. However, the accuracy of the frontal cephalometric radiograph in depicting the shape of the contour and the relationship between the contour and structure was affected greatly by errors in positioning, leading to large errors in morphometry and evaluation of laterality. These results indicated that stereotaxic imaging using 3 D-CT images is very useful in the evaluation and diagnosis of craniofacial symmetry. (J Osaka Dent Univ 2005 ; 39 : 79-86.)
