We investigated field emission (FE) from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown on line-patterned cathode electrodes. The CNTs covered the entire area of each electrode line with the same width for a simple line (SL) pattern, while the CNTs were deposited as a narrow stripe along the central part of each electrode line for a central line (CL) pattern. The CNTs grown on the SL pattern showed a low threshold voltage, but exhibited a gradually spreading FE. Such a spreading FE did not occur for the CL-patterned sample, leading to a stable FE together with an instant turn-on capability.
