Phenylthiomethyl radical <B>1</B> was generated both from anodic oxidation of sodium phenylthioacetate <B>4</B> in sodium methoxide-methanol solution and from thermal decomposition of <I>t</I>-butyl phenylthioperacetate <B>5</B> in benzene. Both reactions afforded a similar trend of product ratios, phenyl disulfide <B>7</B> in 31–32% yield as a major product and 1,2-diphenylthioethane <B>6</B>, the dimer of radical <B>1</B> in 1–2% yield. A chemical and electrochemical reaction process of <B>1</B> along with a plausible mechanism for α-elimination of <B>1</B> is discussed.
