4-(4-Hydroxy-2,6-dimethylphenyl)-1,2-butanediol (<B>3</B>) and 4-(4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylphenyl)-2-butanol (<B>4</B>) as precursors for a theaspirone synthesis have been synthesized starting from 3,5-dimethylphenyl methyl ether.
