The β-substituent effect on the rate of Ei reaction was investigated by using <I>S</I>-(2-phenylthio-, phenylsulfinyl-, and phenylsulfonyl)ethyl]-<I>N</I>-<I>p</I>-tosylsulfilimines. The reactivity lies in the order of β-substituents: Ph-SO<SUB>2</SUB>>PhSO>PhS>Ph. From this and the kinetic isotope effect, the rate determining step is the intramolecular β-hydrogen abstraction by the <I>N</I>-<I>p</I>-tosyl group.
