• The absolute configuration of (−)<SUB>589</SUB>-[Co ox en<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUP>+</SUP> has been determined by the X-ray diffraction method. The crystals of (−)<SUB>589</SUB>-[Co ox en<SUB>2</SUB>]Br·H<SUB>2</SUB>O are orthorhombic, with the space group <I>P</I>2<SUB>1</SUB>2<SUB>1</SUB>2<SUB>1</SUB>, and the unit cell dimensions are: <I>a</I>=16.67(1)Å, <I>b</I>=12.40(1)Å, <I>c</I>=6.183(7)Å, and <I>Z</I>=4. The crystal structure was solved by the conventional Patterson and Fourier methods, and refined by the least-squares procedure to an <I>R</I> factor of 9.97%. The cobalt atom has an octahedral coordination, being chelated by an oxalate anion and two ethylenediamine molecules which are of the <I>ob-lel</I> conformation. The absolute configuration of the complex cation can be denoted as <I>Δ</I>(δλ).
