The crystal structures of “<I>cis</I>-terpin” (terpin hydrate) and “<I>trans</I>-terpin” were elucidated by X-ray crystallography. This crystal structure elucidation showed that the hydroxyl group at C-1 and the 1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl group at C-4 are in <I>cis</I> and <I>trans</I> relationships in the “<I>cis</I>-” and “<I>trans</I>-1,8-terpin” molecules, respectively, similarly to the structures in solutions. A new designation for discriminating between the configurational isomers is proposed on the ground of the IUPAC Rule for Nomenclature.
