Photochemical formation of transient <I>N</I>-vinylcarbazole cation and chloranil anion-radicals has been demonstrated by means of flash spectroscopy for the <I>N</I>-vinylcarbazole–chloranil–solvent systems. Identification and decay of the species formed by flash illumination are described.
