Charge-transfer interaction of a series of trifluoromethylated benzenes with several donor molecules was investigated by measuring electronic absorption and fluorescence spectra. Half-wave reduction potentials of acceptors were determined by cyclic voltammetry. Charge-transfer absorption bands were observed for several systems. Thermal one-electron transfer reactions were observed for solutions of hexakis(trifluoromethyl)benzene and several aromatic amines even in nonpolar solvents. Charge-transfer fluorescence was observed for solutions of hexakis(trifluoromethyl)benzene or tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)benzene and weak donor molecules such as benzene, toluene, or <I>p</I>-xylene.
