The base-induced elimination reaction of 1,2-diphenylethyl phenylsulfonylacetate was investigated in a variety of base–solvent systems. A stronger base was found to facilitate <I>syn</I> elimination. The addition of crown ether caused a remarkable change in the stereochemistry of elimination from <I>syn</I> to <I>anti</I>. In aprotic solvents, an overwhelming <I>syn</I> elimination was observed.
