The oxidation of alkyl aryl ketones by <I>t</I>-butyl hydroperoxide under basic conditions gave products which resulted from the fission of the carbon-carbon bond between carbonyl carbon and alkyl carbon. The reaction was investigated using chiral alkyl aryl ketones. On the basis of the results, a probable reaction mechanism is proposed.
