The reaction of 2,4-azetidinedione with a variety of nucleophiles was compared with that of <I>N</I>-methylsuccinimide. 2,4-Azetidinedione gave ring-cleaved addition products, while <I>N</I>-methylsuccinimide afforded simply addition products to the carbonyl group.
