The anion radicals of pheophytin a and its derivatives studied by means of CIDNP technique.

We applied the Chemically Induced Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (CIDNP) technique to the photochemical reaction of pheophytin <I>a</I> (<B>P1</B>) and 4-methoxyphenol (<B>1</B>) in benzene-<I>d</I><SUB>6</SUB>. The observed CIDNP effects were explained in terms of reversible electron-transfer reactions from <B>1</B> to <SUP>3</SUP>(<B>P1</B>)<SUP>*</SUP> and from (<B>P1</B>)<SUP>\newdot</SUP> to (<B>1</B>)<SUP>\underset.+</SUP>. The polarized signals of <B>P1</B> were induced from the in-cage recombination of the triplet radical ion pair.
