Analysis of Surgical Resection for Lung Metastatic Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas.

We report on 18 patients with bone or soft tissue sarcomas that were treated by resection of metastatic lung tumors during the 18 year period, 1976-1993.Thirty-four thoracotomies in association with adjuvant chemotherapy were carried out in these 18 patients. Eighteen patients with thoracotomy had a higher survival rate than those without thoracotomy. In these cases, the overall survival rate at 5 years after thoracotomy was 37.5% for osteosarcoma and 50% for soft tissue sarcomas.Better results were observed in patients with small numbers of lung metastatic lesions (<6), or with a long interval of over 6 months to lung metastasis. Thoracotomy in combination with adjuvant chemotherapy would be more effective for increasing the survival rate in sarcoma patients with lung metastases.
