Qualitative analysis of gallstones based on their ultrasonic properties.

We made a retrospective study concerning qualitative structure of gallstones based on their ultrasonic properties.Gallstones from 148 patients obtained by surgery were divided into two groups in size. One was a large gallstone group (10mm and over in diameter) and the other was a small gallstone group (less than 10mm).Large stones were classified in relation to strong echo (SE) image and small ones in relation to the location and number in the gallbladder on ultrasonograms. It could be speculated that there was a close relationship between SE-images of gallstones to their cross sectional structure and ultrasonic properties related to chemical composition such as cholesterol and calcium bilirubinate.Consequently, it was suggested that the ultrasonographic classification of gallstones would enable one to make a qualitative analysis, such as cholesterol gllstoens and pigment gallstones, and in useful in selecting patients with gallstones for bile acid dissolution therapy.
