Isoproterenol-Induced Non-Uniform Blood Flow through Ischemic and Non-Ischemic Myocardium in the Dog

The effect of systemic administration of isoproterenol on regional blood flow through the anterior wall of the left ventricle has been studied using anesthetized dogs. The flow was continuously monitored by heated cross-thermocouple.In the absence of coronary constriction, administration of isoproterenol in doses varying from 0.05 to 0.4μg/Kg produced an increase in the flow through the outer half with relative ischemia of the inner half of the ventricular wall.During constriction of the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery, the injections significantly reduced the flow through the outer half, while causing an increase in the flow through the inner half of the constricted portions.The results illustrate the non-uniform changes of myocardial blood flow which can be produced by administration of isoproterenol.
