Search for Naturally Occurring Substances for Prevention against the Complications of Diabetes : Inhibitory Effect on Aldose Reductase and Platelet Aggregation

To find naturally occurring substances which prevent complications involved in diabetes, 169 extracts mainly prepared from plants, Chinese crude drugs and marine algae and the fractions derived from them were examined for the inhibitory effects on bovine lens aldose reductase (bovine-LAR) activity and rabbit platelet aggregation. Of them, 17 samples showed strong inhibitory effects on bovine-LAR, and ten on platelet aggregation induced by ADP, PAF, sodium arachidonate and/or collagen.
