Existence and Properties of Progesterone-binding Proteins in Female Rat Hypothalamus

The characterization of progesterone-binding proteins in cytosols from the medial basal hypothalamus (MBH), the remaining hypothalamus (RH) and the cerebral cortex (CC) of ovariectomized rats was attempted using the techniques of Sephadex gel filtration, sucrose density gradient assay and dextran-coated charcoal adsorption. MBH-cytosol incubated in 3^H-progesterone (^3H-P) with or without various unlabeled steroids contained a specific progesterone-binding protein of a macromolecule (7S) with a binding capacity of〜2×10^<-14> moles per mg protein and dissociation constant of〜6×10^<-9> M. No specific binding protein was, however, contained in cytosols from RH and CC.
