The in vivo effect of progesterone on protein synthesis in the hypothalamus and the cerebral cortex of female ovariectomized rats was studied. Among the tissues examined, protein synthesis was more active in the hypothalamus, especially the medial basal hypothalamus, than in the cerebral cortex. The effect of this hormone on protein synthesis must, however, be conditioned previously with estrogen in these brain tissues.
