Ultrasonic Joining of Polytetrafluoroethylene Sheets Using a Newly Designed 50 kHz Flexural-Mode Transducer System

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE; Teflon^<TM>) has been widely used because of its high-grade characteristics. We joined PTFE sheets using a 320 kHz longitudinal-mode transducer. However, spot size of the joints was very small. Therefore, we attempted to join PTFE sheets using a new 50 kHz flexural-mode transducer system with large diameter. Rubbing the tool end of the transducer on a PTFE sheet can increase the temperature rise of the PTFE sheet. In this paper, the design method of the 50 kHz trarnsducer and the results of joining PTFE sheets of 0.2-0.8 mm thickness using the 50 kHz transducer are described.
