Oxygenation and Critical-Temperature Optimization in M-1212 Cuprates (Sr, Ba)_2YCu_<2.8>M_<0.2>O_z (M=Ti, Ga, Ge, Al)

Correlations among oxygen content (z), critical temperature (T_c) and lattice parameters were studied for M-1212 cuprates prepared at high oxygen pressures. T_c increases linearly with increasing average formal Cu valence (p') and a maximum T_c is realized above a critical p' value ranging from 2.34 to 2.41 which depends on the kind of M cation. Assuming a parabolic relationship between T_c and hole density in. the CuO_2 sheet (p_s), the high critical p' values suggest extraordinarily high hole densities in the CuO planes (p_c). The conclusion is discussed in view of the structures of Cr-1212 cuprates.
