High-Pressure Synthesis of New Superconducting Compound CuSr_2(Y, Ce)_2Cu_2O_z

A new Cu-1222 compound, CuSr_2(Y, Ce)_2Cu_2O_z, is prepared under 〜2 GPa of oxygen. It crystallizes in a tetragonal structure. Samples containing a significant amount of the Cu-1222 phase exhibit superconducting diamagnetic signals below 〜50 K. Synthesis conditions of the Cu-1222 phase are studied using various kinds of starting samples. It is concluded that the Cu-1222 phase is stable under high oxygen pressures, while another phase, (Cu, Ce)Sr_2(Y, Ce)_2Cu_2O_z is metastable at 〜2 GPa of oxygen.
