Preparatiorn and Structure of Al(Sr, Ca)_2HoCu_2O_7 and AlSr_2(Ho, Ca)Cu_2O_7 Cuprates

Chemical composition, lattice parameters and superstructure of the Al-1212 cuprates are studied for samples with nominal compositions AlSr_2R_<1-x>Ca_xCu_2O_7 (R=Y or Ho) by energy dispersive X-ray analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. It is found that the replacement of Ho by Ca occurs predominantly at 2 GPa, whereas the substitution of Sr by Ca occurs at ambient pressure. All the Ca-containing Al-1212 cuprates examined show a superstructure similar to that of AlSr_2YCu_0_7. The fundamental framework structure does not depend on x.
