Preparation of Bulk YBa_2Cu_4O_8 by a Simple Solid-State Reaction Method

An YBa_2Cu_4O_8 superconductor is synthesized without the use of high-pressure oxygen, reaction-rate enhancer or sophisticated heat treatment. The simple method is characterized by using Y_2O_3, Ba(NO_3)_2 and Cul as the starting materials for the solid-state reaction. The X-ray diffraction pattern suggests an almost single YBa_2Cu_4O_8 phase. Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements show a T_c (zero resistance) of 76 K and a T_c (onset) of 83 K characteristic of YBa_2Cu_4O_8
