Space-Resolving Flat-Field Grazing-Incidence Spectrograph for Large Plasma Diagnostics

A flat-field grazing-incidence spectrograph providing spatially resolved spectra in the wave-length range 20-350 Å has been constructed. The spectrograph consists of a limited height entrance slit, an aberration-corrected concave grating with varied spacing grooves, and an image-intensified two-dimensional detector system. Ray-tracing has been carried out to investigate basic characteristics of the spectrograph. It is expected that this type of spectrograph allows for a wide coverage of spectral range within a compact area without sacrificing spectral resolution. The performance of this spectrograph has been tested through experiments using a DC glow discharge lamp and an ultra-soft X-ray source. The requirement on accuracy of the incident angle has been determined experimentally to be less than 0.2°, which is predicted from the ray tracing calculations. The other basic properties of the spectrograph have also been confirmed experimentally about the wavelength coverage, the reciprocal dispersion and the spatial resolution. The spectrograph was practically used to measure both spatial and spectral distributions of soft X-ray radiation in the GAMMA10 tandem mirror plasma.
