Density Fluctuations of Electromagnetic Plasma Waves in Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies

Relationship between the density and magnetic field fluctuations of electromagnetic plasma waves in an infinitely uniform magnetized plasma is studied based on MHD, two-fluid and kinetic linear theories. In the MHD theory, density fluctuation is related to parallel magnetic field fluctuation. The density fluctuations of the shear and compressional Alfven waves are discussed. The two-fluid theory includes parallel electric field fluctuations. The breakdown due to the lack of wave-particle resonances is discussed. In the kinetic theory, the relationship including wave-particle resonances is obtained from the Vlasov equation. The kinetic expression is compared with experimental results for the Alfven ion cyclotron waves observed in GAMMA 10 by means of the reflectometer measurement.
