Effects of an Ambipolar Field on Stability of Electrostatic Drift Waves in Sheet Plasmas

The effects of an ambipolar field on the stability of electrostatic drift waves in sheetplasmas are investigated numerically. The analysis is based on an integral equation inthe wave number space derived from the profiles of Gaussian density and parabolicambipolar potential. The ambipolar field dependence of the eigenfrequency and eigen-function of the drift waves is obtained. It is found that the drift waves are stabilizedfor a strong ambipolar potential of both the hill-type and well-type. The stabilizationis due to the Jon Landau damping caused by the velocity shear effect of the E X Bdrift. Purely growing (zero real frequency) drift modes are also found in the case of ahill-type ambipolar potential.stability, drift wave, ambipolar field, E X B drift, sheet plasma, velocity shear,purely growing mode, integral equation
