Simulation of Nuclear Fusion Induced by Al CIusters Impacting On TiD_2 Target

We studied the nuclear fusion induced by Al cluster bombardment on a TiD_2 target, using the time-evolution Monte Carlo code DYACAT. Calculation has been performed for the incident energies per atom E_0 of 10 keV, 20 keV and 50 keV, and for the cluster sizes N of 50, 100 and 200 atoms. It is found that the impact region becomes in the quasi-equilibrium state at t > 20 fs. The temperature of the target D atom in the impact region is well represented by kT=(E_0^<1.13>/79.6) exp(-t/τ), where the cooling time constant τ is given as τ= 2.1×10^2 N^<0.10>/E_0^<0.12> fs, and kT and E_0 are given in eV. The total fusion yield per an incident Al atom is about 6.0×10^<-14> for 50 keV/atom (Al)_<200> cluster impact. The cluster effect of the fusion yield is more pronounced at the low cluster energy region where the fusion events between energetic D atoms are important.
