Cytochrome b-560 was purified to an electrophoretically homogeneous state from Nitro-somonas europaea. It showed absorption peaks at 427,530 and 560 nm in the reduced form. Its molecular weight was estimated to be 44,000 by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the same value was obtained on the basis of the contents of haem and protein. The cytochrome was not autoxidizable and did not react with CO.
