aa_3-Type Cytochrome c Oxidase Occurs in Halobacterium halobium and Its Activity is Inhibited by Higher Concentrations of Salts

Cytochrome aa_3 was found to occur in Halobacterium halobium at an early exponential phase of growth. Some of its spectral properties were determined with a solubilized membrane fraction of the bacterium. Cytochrome c oxidizing activity of the cytochrome aa_3 was not dependent on salt concentration, but decreased steeply with increasing buffer concentration of the reaction mixture, just as the activity of cytochrome aa_3 from non-halophilic bacteria.
