Solvent effects upon fluorescence quantum yields, fluorescence rise and/or decay curves of <I>p</I>-(CH3)2NC6H4–(CH2)<I>n</I>–(9-anthryl) (<I>n</I>=1, 2, 3) and <I>p</I>-(CH3)2NC6H4–(CH2)<I>n</I>–(1-pyrenyl) (<I>n</I>=1, 2, 3) have been investigated in detail. It is concluded that the sandwich structure is not necessary for the intramolecular charge transfer in polar solvents and that the mechanism of intramolecular heteroexcimer formation in polar solvents is different from that in nonpolar solvents.
