The effects of temperature shifts on the synthesis of protein have been studied in Tetrahymena pyriformis treated with Act D. Temperatures significantly below the growth optimum reduce net protein synthesis, apparently by decreasing the yield of protein produced on each template molecule. High temperature synchronizing shifts produce similar effects on amino acid incorporation but have considerably less effect on another ribosome-associated biosynthetic pathway, complex lipid synthesis. The results indicate that division-synchronizing heat and cold have similar effects on the messenger translational efficiency in Tetrahymena pyriformis.
