1. Oxidation of sodium linoleate emulsion in the presence of a lipoxygenase-like enzyme produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain A-4 was followed manometrically. The optimaltemperature of the reaction was 37℃ and the optimal pH value was 10.0.Oxygen uptake by the substrate was stopped when it reached 1 mol oxygen per mol of substrate.2. Either the peroxide of sodium linoleate or that of the sodium salts of a fatty acid mixture, the major component of which was octadecadienoic acid, (obtained by oxidation with atmospheric oxygen in the presence of the enzyme) seemed to serve not only as an emulsifier but as an initiator in the emulsion polymerization of styrene. The velocity of the polymerization in this case was lower than that using these soaps, not peroxidized, as the emulsifier and the usual initiator, such as potassium presulfate and benzoyl peroxide.However, the molecular weight of the produced polystyrene was approximately identical with that of the polymer obtained by using benzoyl peroxide as the initiator.3. Emulsion polymerization of styrene emulsified by sodium linoleate, not peroxidized, proceeded without an initiator when the enzyme was added and air was supplied to the reaction system.
