Methane fermentation of the cellulosic residue of mangrove viviparous buds after starch had been removed by alcoholic fermentation was examined by the syringe method. Pretretment of the bud residue was found to be very effecrive. Cooking in water at 124℃ for 1 h improved the whole gas yield by about 7.5 fold, while cooking in sodium hydroxide solutions of 0.2 and 1.0 N at the same temperature and time interval inhibited gas evolution. Correction of the C/N ratio of the fermentation mash from 83 or higher to about 20 was not necessary. However, the addition of organic nitrogenous sources, in particular meat and yeast extracts, improved the gas yields. Also, improvement of the whole and methane gas yields could be done by incubating the residue with cellulases prior to fermentation.
