A Streptomyces sp. Effective for Conversion of Cyanide into Thiocyanate

A strain of Streptomyces sp., seemingly belonging to Streptomyces lavendulae, which had been screened as a microorganism able to grown in media containing 100 mM sodium thiosulfate, was observed to oxidize thiosulfate rapidly and show high activities of thiosulfate oxidase and rhodanese. Both the enzymes formed were extracted from the mycelium with "Tween 80". The rhodanese showed its optimum at pH 7.0,and was stable in a pH range from 6.5 to 8.0. The thiosulfate oxidase had its optimum at pH 5.5,and was stable in a pH region from 4.5 to 6.0. The microorganism grew even in the presence of potassium cyanide at more than 10 mM, provided that a proper amount of sodium thiosulfate was supplied to the medium, though the lag phase of growth was significantly delayed. Accumulation of thiocyanate was observed under these conditions.
