Stability of the Thermal Convection in a Tilted Square Cavity

The stability of the two-dirnensional therrnal convection in a square cavity heated from oneside is investigated by restricting two-dirnensional disturbances. The four sides of the cavity areassumed to be rigid and perfectly thermal conducting. The fluid is in a rnotionless state whenthe cavity is placed horizontally with the hotter side down. A thermal convection occurs as apitchfork bifurcation from the rnotionless state due to the instability if the temperature differenceexceeds a critical value in that case, btrt it always occtrrs even if the ternperattrre difference isvery small when the cavity is tilted and the bifurcation is the iunperfect pitchfork bifurcation.The equilibrium state of' the convection is calctrlated numerically in the range of O' - 90' for theangle of the tilt. The stability o['the equilibrium state is also investigated. It is shown that theinstability occurs as a Hopf bifurcation or a pitchfork bifurcattion depending on the angle of thetilt.
