The stability of natural convection in a fluid between two parallel vertical plates isinvestigated theoretically. Temperatures of the two plates are different by 2T. and auniform temperature gradient 73 (<0) is present in the vertical direction. It is found that the critical value of the Grashof' number G based on T varies as 4?92 - 9.36 Ra when Ra< n'/ 16, G. = { when Rawn'/16;and an absolute instability when Ra >to'/ 16, where .Ra is the Rayleigh number based on p. Two numerical coefficients in the expression<>f G. vary slightly with the Prandtlnumber smaller than 10. An abrupt decrease in G. is attributed to a change of modes ofthe instability.
