Anisotropic Thermal Expansion and Field-Induced Structural Phase Transition in PrCu_2

The Jahn-Teller effect and metamagnetic transition in single crystalline PrCur have been studled by thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements in the pararnagnetic state. The tinear therrnal expansion in the ternperattrre range from 1.8 to 300 K is fotrnd to be quite anisotropicin the xvhole teunperature range, which is due to the highly anisotropic crystallitue electric field.The magnetostrictions along the three crystallographic axes in the field along the c-axis alsoindicate anisotropic behavior with 2111 extremely large length change and large hysteresis. It usclarified that the metarnagnetic transition with the conx'ersion of the Ising axis in PrCu3 is dueto the large modification of the crystalline electric field by the field-indtrced structural phasetransition.
