Crystalline Electric Field and Metamagnetic Transition of PrCu_2

We have measured the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization of PrCuz. These magneticproperties are highly anisotropic, which are mainly due to the orthorhombic crystalline electricfield (CEF). The energy scheme of' the 4f levels in PrCuz has been estimated by fitting theCEF theory to the susceptibility data. A new metarnagnetism has been observed in the widetemperature range of 1.3 K to 50 K. The transition field increases almost linearly from 10 T to32 T with the increase of temperattrre from 1.3 K to 50 K.
