An exact and analytical solution of the Riemann problem for solids has been ob-tained. It is assumed that the square of the acoustic impedance along an isentropicchange of state can be expressed as the quadratic function of pressure. A Grfineisen-type equation of state calculated from this assumption has been used and the solutionof the Riemann problem obtained after a rather simple calculation. The solution canalso be extended to the case of powders, and a rnumerical example is presented forsolid and porous aluminum.[High-pressure shock wave, shock wave in solids, Griineisen equation of state, ]j Riemann probleml
