Polygonal Deformation of Toroidal Smectic-A Domains in Isotropic Phase Induced by Electric-Field Application

Electric field-induced polygonal deforrnation of smectic-A toroidal domains in isotropic phasehas been observed in the binary mixttrres of octyloxycyanobiplaenyl xvith dodecyl alcohol. Itis found that the ntrrnber of sides of polygonally deformed srnectic-A domains (m) is increasedwith increasing electric field, and that at a constant electric field larger smectic-A domainspossess higher values of m. These experiznental findings can successfully be explained in terrnsof numerical soltrtions to tlae variation problem for equilibriuraa shapes of stmectic-A phase inisotropic phase [H. Naito, K/I. Okuda and Z. Ou-Yang: Phys. Rev. Lett. 70 (1993) 2912].
