Lattice Instability and Elastic Response in the Heavy Electron System URu_2Si_2

We have performed thermal expansion and elastic constant measurements of the heavy electronsystem URuzSiz, focusing attention on the f3(.r' - y') and fj(.ry) syrnrnetr'y of the tetragonalgroup D,jj. It is reconfirmed that there is no sizable uniform spontaneous distortion for thesetwo types of symmetry through the puzzling phase transition at Tc) O 17.5 K. On the otherhand, a weak but significant tendency of softening are fotrnd below about 70 K in the transverse(c?u - C12)/2 mode. The restrlts strongly strggest the presence of a lattice instability in the 73symmetry. From the results, proposed crystalline-electric-field models are also discttssed.
