Deuteron Self-Trapped State and the Strain-Mediated Structural Phase Transition in KDCO_3

The phase transition mechanism of KDCO_3 crystal composed of hydrogen-bonded (DCO_3)_2-dimers has been studied by neutron scattering. Strong quasielastic diffuse scattering is observed above T_c. From detailed analysis of the intensity distribution in a wide range of the reciprocal space, the following conclusions are drawn. (i) Even at T>T_c, the individual dimer is already deformed by the self-trapping of deuterons within the hydrogen bond, thus locally breaking the symmetry of the averaged lattice. (ii) The inter-dimer interaction takes place via the strain field induced by the independent deformed dimers. The structural phase transition in KDCO_3 is triggered by this strain-mediated indirect interaction between the dimers.
